Reports: NFL suspends ex-USC TE Saunders

- ashain@thestate.com

Weslye Saunders, a former South Carolina tight end who played with the Steelers last season, has been suspended for the first four games of the 2012 season for violating the NFL's performance-enhancing substances policy, several Pittsburgh-area news outlets reported Tuesday.

The 6-foot-5, 270-pound Durham, N.C., native was kicked off the Gamecocks for his senior season in 2010.

Saunders said last year that he believed he was suspended for being untruthful with NCAA and South Carolina officials about his relationship with a person whom officials deemed as a runner for an agent.

After catching 60 passes for 718 yards and six touchdowns in three seasons at USC, he was one of the top tight ends coming out in 2011 but went undrafted.

Saunders signed with Pittsburgh. He played in 17 games, catching four passes for 29 yards. He scored one touchdown at Kansas City in November.

"It's hard to know if it's more appropriate to be happy or sad..." Saunders tweeted with his horoscope on Monday.
