Briefly: Lee leads in golf; softball victorious

At Sorrento, Fla., South Carolina sophomore Suzie Lee tied a career low with a 1-under 71 to lead the Gamecocks in Sunday’s opening round of the UCF Challenge at RedTail Golf Club. USC shot a 290 (+2) in its first tournament of 2012 to finish the day in fifth place. Second-round play is scheduled to get underway today at 9:30 a.m.

Softball: USC is Palmetto Classic champs

Senior Evan Childs went 4-for-4 with her first homer of the year, two doubles and three RBIs as South Carolina (3-1) downed Cleveland State (0-4) 7-4 on the final day of the Palmetto Classic at Beckham Field. Winthrop’s 3-1 victory over Tennessee State gave USC the tournament title, since the Gamecocks held the edge over Western Kentucky thanks to a head-to-head win. USC’s Kaitlin Westfall was tournament MVP.
