“Coach Emeritus” Frank McGuire, the man responsible for bringing Carolina basketball to prominence, coached the last game of his illustrious career today. McGuire posted a record of 283-142 in his 16 years at USC.

It was quite a finale for Coach McGuire, as his team won a wild two overtime thriller against Western Kentucky 73-65.

After being inducted into the USC Hall-of-Fame at halftime, Coach witnessed a bizarre second-half in which neither team scored from the 5:39 mark, through the entire first OT period! With no shot clock and the game tied at 54, both teams tried to hold the ball for the final shot throughout this period, but were unsuccessful. In the second OT, Carolina opened it up and was able to pull away from the pesky Hilltoppers, giving McGuire his 549th and final career victory.

Coach McGuire passed away on November 11, 1994, at the age of 80. He will be remembered forever among the Gamecock family.
