INDIANAPOLIS — Travian Robertsons first full day at the NFL Combine started early.
The former South Carolina defensive lineman was rousted from bed at 4:30 a.m. on Saturday to start his day with a drug test, he said.
A lot of people think that you just come run and jump, but its all business every day. Its straight business the whole trip, Robertson said. I never thought about all the medical attention we would get. Its a lot that we go through, but its all worth it.
Robertson, 6-4, 302 pounds, and former teammate Melvin Ingram will continue their day Sunday with more team interviews and the bench press.
Robertson, who gained more than 70 pounds during his collegiate career, is hoping to log more than 30 repetitions with 225 pounds on the bench press. He also thinks he can impress with his 40-yard dash, but he wouldnt predict what time he might run.
WATKINS SIGHTING
Offensive lineman Rokevious Watkins didnt make it to the media room during his first two days of the combine, but he finally dropped by Saturday a few hours before catching a flight back to South Florida, where he is training.
Watkins, 6-4, weighed 338 pounds when he checked in here, which was almost 10 pounds heavier than his goal. He would like to be between 325 and 329 pounds, he said, and hell try to drop more weight before the Gamecocks pro day on March 28.
Despite the extra pounds, Watkins hoped to prove his athleticism in Saturdays drill work. His 40-yard dash (5.39 seconds), 3-cone drill (7.87 seconds) and broad jump (102 inches) were all middle of the pack for the offensive linemen, but his vertical jump (27 inches) and shuttle run (4.9 seconds) were in the bottom third.
I want to show people I can move, he said. We have a lot of different speculations about me and my body type and people saying I cant move so I wanted to show them that I was able to move and that Im a nimble 338 and not a sloppy 338.
Watkins did not bench press here due to a wrist injury he suffered in the Capital One Bowl, he said. He plans to bench press at pro day in Columbia.
DEPTH CHART DECISIONS
Melvin Ingram, who is expected to be drafted in the first round, was asked how such a highly ranked player could start just one year in college.
Just coming in being in a situation where somebody was ahead of me and I had to wait my turn, he said. I did whatever the team needed for me to do and at that point in time, it wasnt to be a starter.
As a junior, Ingram played behind Cliff Matthews, who was drafted in the seventh round by the Atlanta Falcons last year.
