Boynton OK with Martin’s staffing decisions

Published: April 3, 2012

Although the university has not made it official, new basketball coach Frank Martin plans to bring his entire coaching staff from Kansas State to join him next season at South Carolina, former assistant coach Mike Boynton said Tuesday during an interview with 560 The Team.

Boynton would have considered staying with the Gamecocks but applauded Martin’s decision, he said.

“It’s the right thing to do,” Boynton, who was on Darrin Horn’s staff for four seasons before Horn was fired last month, told the radio station. “Frank Martin made the right decision in being loyal to the guys who helped him get to this position. I have total respect for what he has done.”

Brad Underwood, who could not be reached for comment, was on Martin’s staff all five years Martin was at Kansas State and served as the Wildcats’ director of basketball operations for one season under Bob Huggins. Underwood was Martin’s associate head coach last season. Underwood has previously been the head coach at Daytona Beach Community College and an assistant at Western Illinois.

Matt Figger also spent five seasons under Martin at Kansas State and was the Wildcats’ recruiting coordinator. He coached for five seasons under John Pelphrey at South Alabama.

Lamont Evans spent one season at Kansas State with Martin as a full-time assistant. Prior to that, he was a manager for the team. =on the air with 560 taking questions from callers.
