11 YEARS AGO TODAY: April 10, 2001

Athletic Director Mike McGee introduces Dave Odom as the new basketball coach at the University of South Carolina. Odom became the 30th coach in school history, following Eddie Fogler, who had resigned four weeks earlier.

Odom came from Wake Forest, where he had been for 12 seasons. During his last eleven years, the Demon Deacons never finished worse than fifth in the ACC. The only other team that could make that claim was North Carolina. During that period, Odom’s record was an impressive 240-132. He was named the National Coach of the Year in 1995.

Odom signed a five-year contract with a base salary of $150,000. The total package totaled $750,000, roughly the same salary he received at Wake Forest.
