SEC impressions: Good news, bad news for USC

Published: September 17, 2012

Here’s the best news of the weekend for South Carolina fans: Georgia fans are now joking that it’s unfair the Gamecocks get to play Arkansas and the Bulldogs do not.

Seriously, three weeks ago, we were all wondering if South Carolina could figure out a way to be competitive in that game, and now I have my doubts the Razorbacks will be fielding a varsity team when Nov. 10 rolls around. I don’t care who is playing, you can’t lose a conference game 52-0.

Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson, who missed the game with a concussion, said afterward that some of his teammates quit, and there’s no real way you can argue that point. Wilson will be back by the time the Gamecocks play the Razorbacks, but I’m not sure this team, under fill-in coach John L. Smith, can come back from where it is right now.

Suddenly then, Georgia’s schedule and South Carolina’s schedule look a lot more equitable. By beating the Bulldogs on Oct. 6, the Gamecocks can essentially make that Oct. 13 game at LSU meaningless.

So, that’s the good news.

The bad news is Florida is not quite as bad as I thought they were. The Gators now have a confident quarterback – sophomore Jeff Driskel, who threw for 219 yards on 20 attempts and rushed for 81 yards – which is something they haven’t had in coach Will Muschamp’s tenure. Florida scored the final 24 points against Tennessee on Saturday in Neyland Stadium and now has two second-half comebacks in a row. The notion that Florida had no talent after Urban Meyer left always was absurd, so if the Gators start feeling good about themselves, they’ll be a tough out and a contender in the division.

On the flip side, the potential is now there for Tennessee to have an Arkansas-ish collapse. Coach Derek Dooley had a lot riding on the Florida game, and he and his team might not be able to bounce back. The Volunteers looked prone to making mistakes on offense, and the Gamecocks are good at forcing those kinds of mistakes.

As for Georgia, the Bulldogs still are lurking. Georgia set a school record with 713 yards against Florida Atlantic on Saturday. I say Oct. 6 can’t get here fast enough.
