Gamecocks land highly rated DT Griffin

Defensive tackle Kelsey Griffin of Hochston, Ga., committed to South Carolina on Wednesday.

Griffin (6-3, 290) announced a commitment to Georgia on Sept. 21 only to see the Bulldogs not accept it. This past Saturday Griffin made another unofficial visit to USC. And he said things went well.

Griffin's coach Shannon Jarvis announced the commitment in a press release:

"Kelsey has just informed me and the coaches at the University of South Carolina that he is committing to play football there next fall," Jarvis said in the statement. "Kelsey attended the South Carolina / Georgia game on an unofficial visit this weekend and returned home to finalize his decision with his parents this week.

"Kelsey had offers from schools across the entire country before narrowing his choices to South Carolina and UGA this summer. He is very excited about the opportunity to play for the University of South Carolina and be a part of their continued success."

Griffin also visited USC for the spring game.

Last season Griffin had 98 tackles with 24 tackles for loss. USC, Georgia, Florida, Florida State and Auburn have been his top schools throughout the process.

Griffin is a consensus four-star prospect. 247Sports ranks him the 79th best player overall in this class and the fifth-best defensive tackle nationally. He joins linebacker Matt Rolin as Gamecocks commitments who were selected for the Under Armour All-America Game.

He is South Carolina's 21st commitment for the 2013 class.
