At Athens, Ga., South Carolina (11-7, 1-3 SEC) played tough doubles but struggled to find footing in singles in a 5-2 loss at No. 5 Georgia (12-4, 4-1). The Gamecocks’ No. 2 tandem of Kyle Koch and Harry Menzies scored its second-straight win over a ranked opponent by winning the last three games of the match. Alabama nips USC
No. 4 Alabama (26-3, 4-3 SEC) held off a USC comeback attempt to win 7-6. The Gamecocks (16-9, 0-3) scored three in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by Chelsea Hawkins’ lead-off homer, and eventually closed the gap to 7-5. Shelby Gonzales singled home Hawkins in the bottom of the seventh before Alabama pitcher Jackie Traina ended the threat.
