— One of the evening’s worst-kept secrets became official on Wednesday. Texas A&M, as reported by the Aggies’ media on Tuesday night, will open the 2014 season in Columbia.

It’s a great matchup, another chance for South Carolina to officially open the college football year and be showcased to the nation.

It’s also a case of what might have been.

Having North Carolina start this season is a nice game, which will start a series of nice games between the two neighboring state universities. But boy, if only the SEC could have found a way to start this rotation this year instead of next.

Can you imagine?

Thursday night at Williams-Brice, rocking and swaying. The Head Ball Coach once again gracing the first ESPN game of the year. And Johnny Football vs. Jadeveon. The four-letter network would have had to create its own channel to broadcast that game, with all of that thrown into the hype.

Clowney and Johnny will doubtless be in the NFL next year, depriving a matchup of two Heisman hopefuls going against each other.

The last time that happened at Willy B was when Tim Waymen squared off with Joe Kane.
