South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw

In Sunday’s college football preview section inside The State, we explore South Carolina’s quarterback situation, which is more cut and dry than we thought it might be with five days left until the Gamecocks’ season opener against North Carolina.

Steve Spurrier said this week that Dylan Thompson might enter the first game in the second or third quarter but offered no guarantee of a rotation. For now, at least, the Gamecocks are Connor Shaw’s football team.

Why? We explore those reasons in depth in the preview section, but I’ll tell you the reason that sticks out to me — 17-3 as a starter. That’s impressive on the surface and even more so when you look deeper. All three of those losses came against Top 10 teams on the road.

“Honestly, I really don’t pay too much attention to it,” Shaw said of the record. “I can’t really think about it until my career is over. Like I’ve said before, all I do is try to win.”
