After pitchers began throwing bullpen sessions at the end of last week, the South Carolina baseball team’s hitters got back to work Tuesday with the start of position-player workouts in preparation for the 2014 season next spring.

USC coach Chad Holbrook posted on Twitter that he was ready to get underway: “Excited about seeing guys swing the bat. Let’s see if we can hit a few over Tanner Way.”

The first official full team practice this fall will be held Sept. 13 at Carolina Stadium. Forty-eight players will be vying for the spots on the 35-man roster. Team practice for the fall ends Oct. 27.

Among the players not returning is outfielder T.J. Costen, who batted .250 with eight RBIs in 35 games as a sophomore last season. Costen transferred to USC Aiken, where former Gamecock pitcher Nolan Belcher, the team’s ace last season, will serve as an assistant coach in the coming season.
