Spurrier on Botkin, Adams tiff: 'We hashed it out'

An ESPN camera caught a heated exchange between linebackers coach Kirk Botkin and defensive line coach Deke Adams.

Steve Spurrier now has seen the video of two of his defensive assistant coaches being separated on the sideline at the Georgia game, and he said South Carolina fans don’t have to worry about seeing it again.

“We hashed it out Sunday,” Spurrier said Tuesday. “They know we’re not going to have any more of that.”

First-year defensive line coach Deke Adams and second-year linebackers coach Kirk Botkin screamed at each other and appeared near a physical confrontation Saturday afternoon at Sanford Stadium as the Gamecocks were on their way to a frustrating 41-30 loss to the Bulldogs. Defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward stepped between the coaches and pushed Botkin backward. TV footage later showed the coaches talking calmly about the situation.

“I really didn’t think too much about it,” said spur Sharrod Golightly, who is part of Botkin’s position group. “We just have two passionate coaches. They just wanted to win. I didn’t really see it, but I think it’s over with.”

South Carolina’s defensive assistant coaches are traditionally available for interviews following Tuesday’s practice. Adams and Botkin were requested but not approved to speak.

Spurrier was unaware of the incident immediately following Saturday’s game. When informed, he said, “Well, at least they care.”
