Practice report: Williams no lock to see action

David Williams and Shon Carson

Everette Sands didn’t know.

“On one hand, I’d like to hold him,” South Carolina’s running backs coach said Wednesday. “On the other hand, I’ve got to make sure I’m ready for him to play.”

Freshman running back David Williams will dress for the No. 13 Gamecocks’ home game against Kentucky on Saturday, but Sands might be trying to hold him back. The plan was for Williams to redshirt, but the Gamecocks have to dress him because Brandon Wilds could be out a month or more with a dislocated elbow.

Mike Davis remains the starter and should get plenty of touches against Kentucky, which is giving up 200.8 rushing yards per game (13th in the SEC). Shon Carson is the backup and will play, but Carson has three carries for 6 yards this season.

Sands likes to keep and play three backs per game, if possible, which leaves Williams as the only other option. He is ahead of redshirt freshman Kendric Salley, and the only other tailback on the roster is walk-on Devin Potter.

Williams is excited for any opportunity he gets.

“I’ve just got to be ready when they call my number,” he said Wednesday. “I didn’t expect to redshirt, but I was open to it if I needed to.”

It is what it is

Coach Steve Spurrier credited his team for the wins it’s been able to get this season, despite some rough play at times.

“I’m sort of proud of our team right now,” he said. “As most people know, we actually do have the youngest Division I football team in the country with only four scholarship senior guys, and they’ve done pretty well. Yeah, we’ve had some lapses, we’ve almost blown some leads the last couple of weeks, but to be 3-1, that’s not bad.”

Fashion update

USC will wear garnet jerseys and white pants on Saturday, per a tweet from the Gamecocks’ equipment staff.

Injury report

Rory “Busta” Anderson was back in full-contact practice after missing a day or two because of a mild back injury.

Players who wore yellow jerseys or missed practice were: Devin Washington (concussion), Brandon Wilds (dislocated elbow), Cody Waldrop (sprained ankle), Phillip Dukes (sprained left knee) and Mike Matulis (shoulder).
