South Carolina begins its season next week, but the accolades have already started to accumulate. The Gamecocks, who play an exhibition against North Greenville tonight, are No. 22 in the Associated Press preseason Top 25 poll released on Friday.

USC was No. 21 in the USA Today/coaches’ Top 25.

The Gamecocks are coming off a 25-8 season and their second straight NCAA tournament appearance, but were picked to finish seventh in the SEC in a preseason media poll. There are six SEC teams in the AP poll, led by Tennessee at No. 4.

Coach Dawn Staley appreciates the ranking, but realizes that it’s based on past performance.

“For us, I think it’s a good thing because they are recognizing our program for the successes that we had, and that’s always a good thing,” Staley said on Thursday. “But that was last year’s team. Hopefully we can live up to it and maybe move up in the polls.”
