South Carolina was 2-for-2 in SEC Freshmen of the Week on Monday.

South Carolina’s Sindarius Thornwell and Alaina Coates were each named SEC Freshman of the Week on Monday, the second straight for Coates and third of the season and the first for Thornwell.

Thornwell, a 6-foot-5, 206-pound freshman guard from Lancaster, averaged 1.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists against No. 10 Florida and LSU. Thornwell shot 66.7 percent (12-18) from the field in posting 10 points at Florida, and a season-high 25 points against LSU. He was a perfect 2-of-2 from 3-point range against Florida while collecting three steals to match his season-high. Against LSU, Thornwell scored 25, including 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting in the first half. Coates continued to impress in two games last week as she heavily contributed to two wins and the Gamecocks’ vault to the top of the SEC standings.

Coates posted her fourth straight double-double with 10 points and a USC freshman-record 17 rebounds in a win over then-No. 9 Kentucky, and has scored in double figures in six straight games. She scored all 14 of her points in the first half in Sunday’s win at Auburn, smoothing a rough USC offensive showing, and is averaging 12 points, 11.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in SEC games.

Coates is the only SEC freshman to rank in the league’s top 25 in scoring (22nd) and rebounding (sixth).
