DE Darrius Caldwell of Pearl River JC, MS is considering not signing on Wednesday in hopes that he'll be granted a waiver from the SEC junior college transfer rule allowing him to go to USC, his coach said Friday night.

Caldwell was committed to the Gamecocks until the SEC discovered Illinois had declared him a non-qualifier in November of 2011 but allowed him to stay in school until he transferred to Pearl River last fall. Caldwell was not able to meet the SEC's three semester rule at the junior college and thus was not eligible to transfer to a league school.

Coach William Jones said Caldwell mentioned to him earlier this week that he's considering holding off on signing to see if there will be a positive resolution of his situation with USC. Jones said he talked with USC recruiter Deke Adams and was told USC was still working on the situation.

Caldwell had planned to visit Arizona State this weekend but Jones, who's been on the road recruiting himself, said he wasn't sure if Caldwell had left on the trip. Jones said other schools have been inquiring about Caldwell, but he'd like to see this worked out to allow him to go to USC.
