Aleighsa Welch was one of the biggest reasons why South Carolina stayed in first place in the SEC last week.

The league office noticed.

Welch was named SEC Co-Player of the Week on Monday, splitting the award with Florida’s Kayla Lewis. Welch, who paced the Gamecocks (22-2, 10-1 SEC) during two games when the rest of the team was in foul trouble or ineffective, is the first USC player to earn the honor this season.

Welch led the Gamecocks in scoring (17.0 points) and rebounds (9.0), while ranking second in assists (2.5) and blocks (3.5), over the two games last week. She posted her seventh double-double of the year against Mississippi State and had a career-best five blocks against Arkansas.
