Did you know…

Welch’s nickname isn’t what you would expect from one of the league’s best power forwards.

“It’s ‘Muffin,’ actually short for ‘Chocolate Chip Muffin.’ It was a nickname I had as a child, and I assumed growing up it would fade away. My mother is still holding on strong to it.”

It didn’t take long for the nickname to spread.

“If there’s one way you can find my mother in the crowd, it’s to listen for ‘Muffin!’ and she’ll pop up. When I came to school, I was like, ‘I’m getting out the nest now, I’m grown,’ and then coach Staley adopted it. Now, I’ve embraced it.”

As fearless as she is on the court, she’s a loner off it.

“I’m actually a very shy person. I kind of stay within the team. I look at my teammates as my best friends, so I don’t really socialize with a lot of people outside the team, because I’ve learned to consume myself with basketball. If you see me in the Russell House or around campus, you won’t see me with a crowd of people.”

She’s made the Dean’s List twice.

“I take my grades very seriously. I’m a Sport and Entertainment major, and I have a 3.5 GPA.”
