South Carolinas baseball game against Tennessee Friday night at Carolina Stadium was suspended due to rain after 11 innings with the score tied at 2-2. The game will be resumed Saturday at 4 p.m., and once it is completed, the regularly-scheduled game will be played. (Weather could play a role Saturday, with an 80 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms in the forecast.)
Tickets from Fridays game are still good for the completion of the first game. Saturdays tickets are good only for the second game.
Before play was halted Friday, the second-ranked Gamecocks hooked up in a pitchers duel against the No. 22 Volunteers in a game that started 75 minutes late due to wet weather.
USC left-hander Jordan Montgomery, who struggled in his first two SEC outings of the season, threw a strong seven innings, as he allowed two runs one earned on four hits and two walks with six strikeouts. But his walk of Will Maddox to start the eighth ended his night and put the go-ahead run on base. Maddox came around to score on Christin Stewarts sacrifice fly to give the Volunteers a 2-1 lead.
Tennessee right-hander Nick Williams matched Montgomery with a solid 7 2/3 innings, as he gave up two runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out five. But Tanner Englishs bunt single to start the eighth inning ended with him coming around to score with the help of a wild pitch and a passed ball to tie the game at 2-2.
USC reliever Joel Seddon pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the 10th inning to extend the game.
South Carolina tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth inning thanks to some timely hitting. Joey Pankake lined a two-out single to extend his hitting streak to 13 games before Kyle Martin, who had three hits, ripped an RBI double into the left-center gap. Tennessee took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, which got started with one out on a double by Stewart and single by Nick Senzel to put runners on the corners. It appeared as if Montgomery would escape the jam, but Elliott Caldwell dropped a fly ball on the run in left field with two outs to score the run.
