NFL Draft stock watch: Projecting the Gamecocks

May 3, 2014

Jadeveon Clowney is a sure-fire first round NFL Draft pick, perhaps even No. 1. Here is a look at other former USC players in the NFL Draft, which runs Thursday through Saturday:

Projection by The State: Second round position ranking: 13th

ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper: “I like him athletically. You know about the basketball background, you know how quick he is. He’s a threat, and he’s a fear-factor player that I think is going to be a second-round draft choice. He has climbed, and I think he’s a solid second-round guy.”

Projection by The State: Third round position ranking: Ninth

Mel Kiper: “I was a little disappointed when I looked at him. I didn’t see that impactful player that he flashed when you looked at him superficially. I gave him a fifth-round grade. Some people think more like third.”

Projection by The State: Fourth round position ranking: 29th

Mel Kiper: “I gave him a Day 3 grade (rounds four through seven) based on performance.”

Projection by The State: Sixth round position ranking: 14th

Mel Kiper: “Connor Shaw is that gritty, competitive overachiever type quarterback that probably looks more like a career backup than a starter. I think he’s a fifth- to seventh-rounder.”

CHAZ SUTTON, DE position ranking: 26th

Projection by The State: Undrafted free agent
