A quick hoops note before I head to the coast …

Been some rumblings lately about Carey Rich potentially joining Frank Martin’s staff at South Carolina. As many of you know, Rich is a Columbia guy and played for the Gamecocks from 1993-95, and has been instrumental at helping build the brand of Gamecock basketball around the city and state. His S.C. Pro-Am, about to begin another season in July, offers the chance for high-school, college and professional players to get together and play full-court games during the summer, getting some different looks instead of playing pickup against the same teammates all the time.

I talked to Rich on Thursday and here’s what he said:

“Frank and I’s relationship has become very, very strong. We do have a very trustful relationship and he relies on me to help kind of bridge the gap when it comes to former players. I’m in the community and he relies on me to help him with that. We also spend a lot of time talking basketball, talking X’s and O’s. There’s also stuff that we talk about that me as a former player can do to help build the program.”

So that’s where that stands.
