Former South Carolina cornerback Ahmad Christian is taking his talents west - to Utah - he announced on Twitter on Monday.
"Committed to Utah," Christian tweeted. "Baseball got nun to do wit it its all pigskin."
Christian, a 5-10, 189-pound native of Jacksonville, Fla., would have been the most experienced cornerback for the Gamecocks in 2014 had he stayed with the program. He left South Carolina in December on what a source told The State was a decision to leave to be closer to his ailing mother.
"South Carolina been fun but i have decided i want to be sumwhere closer to home thanks for all the support and ppl behind me love y'all," he tweeted in December.
Christian on Monday told the Scout site Ute Sports Report that he left the Gamecocks on good terms but that "some things weren't working at South Carolina."
"The coaches and I had different views on some stuff," he told the site, "so I decided that it was best for me to try somewhere new."
Christian told Ute Sports Report that he picked Utah over Miami, UCLA, Southern Miss and several other schools. He has yet to visit Utah and expects to have two years of eligibility with the Utes.
Christian played in 24 games the past two seasons after signing with South Carolina as a three-star prospect out of Trinity Christian High School. He was the teams third-leading tackler among cornerbacks in the regular season last year, with 18 stops to go along with two pass breakups and a forced fumble.
The Gamecocks signed five defensive backs in the 2014 class after losing Christian, Jimmy Legree, Victor Hampton and Ronnie Martin.
Christian also had a short stint with the Gamecocks baseball team.
After failing to make the 35-man roster at USC as a true freshman, Christian made the cut in 2013 but an injury early in the season kept him out of the regular rotation and he finished with one hit in five at-bats. He was selected in the 46th round of the Major League Baseball draft coming out of high school.
He played baseball for Seminole State College of Florida in Sanford, Fla., this past season. In 42 games he hit .253 with two home runs, 25 RBIs, 20 runs scored and seven stolen bases.
