USC gained its second commitment of the day Monday night from athlete Octavis Johnson (6-0 183) of Homerville, GA.
Johnson revealed his commitment on Twitter, joining DB Jaire Alexander of Charlotte as new Gamecock commitments Monday. And he could eventually join Alexander in the Gamecock secondary.
The Gamecocks now have 19 commitments for their class, 18 of them from out of state.
As recently as last week the four-star prospect had declared Tennessee as his favorite. He made the statement shortly after a visit to Knoxville. Johnson also had offers from Clemson, Auburn, Ole Miss, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Florida State, Missouri and Texas A&M.
He narrowed his list to USC, Clemson and Tennessee before announcing for the Gamecocks. He visited USC last football season and he visited Clemson and Tennessee this spring.
"He had been thinking about South Carolina for awhile and South Carolina was always in his top three," said Clinch County assistant coach Rance Morgan. "He visited Tennessee a couple of weeks ago but kept thinking about South Carolina. He's been following recruiting and seeing the commitments picking up and he had to protect himself. He didn't want anything to slip away so he went ahead and pulled the trigger."
Carrying the athlete label, Johnson is considered someone who can play several positions, but his coach says he wants to play cornerback at USC and that's what they recruited him for.
"The wide receiver coach wants him to think about playing on the other side, but he wants to play cornerback," Morgan said. "His favorite player is Champ Bailey."
Given that his favorite player is a former Georgia star and that he recently was favoring Tennessee, the question is, will Johnson's commitment to USC hold up?
"I think it will stick," Morgan said. "He liked South Carolina from the beginning. Coach Botkin has done a good job."
Johnson and some of his teammates will be at USC for a camp July 25th.
Johnson also has a highly coveted junior teammate in DE Chauncy Manac who counts USC and Clemson among his early offers.
