Steve Spurrier was part of Sports Illustrateds annual Where Are They Now? issue last week.
The magazine caught up with the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the last NFL team to lose every game in a single season (0-14) before the 2008 Detroit Lions. Spurrier, in his last NFL season, was the quarterback of the team.
Spurrier came to the Bucs after nine years of backup duty in San Francisco, and was the never-say-die swashbuckler the situation called for, as author Michael McKnight coined. Every week he would try to do something with Tampas hapless offense, and every week he would take the snap, unload it quickly, get creamed, repeat.
With the line we had, Steve never had a chance, right guard Steve Wilson said.
Spurrier and his wife, Jerri, would host weekly parties to boost the teams flagging morale.
Yep, we had some good parties that year, Spurrier told McKnight. We did some losin, but we didnt do much mournin.
