USC defensive line signee Dexter Wideman of Saluda should have his freshman eligibility status for this season determined by the end of next week, his coach said Friday.

“I would say that I don’t know,” coach Stewart Young said. “It’s still up in the air. We’ll know something by the middle or end of next week.”

Young said should Wideman not qualify, all efforts would be made for him to be able to enroll in a prep school so he could get to USC in January.

Wideman is one of four Gamecock 2014 signees whose qualifying status remains up in the air. The others are DB Wesley Green, DB Chris Lammons and DB Darin Smalls.

Three other signees are definite non-qualifiers for this season. DE Dante Sawyer is at East Mississippi JC, TE Kalan Ritchie is at Georgia Military JC and DE Jhaustin Thomas failed to qualify out of Trinity Valley JC, TX.

Another signee, FB Joe Blue of Dillon, did not enroll for the summer school sessions, but his coach Jackie Hayes said he was informed Friday that Blue has been officially ruled as a qualifier and will enroll on July 31 - assuming he’s accepted by the university, which, of course, is the case for all recruits attempting to qualify.
